All tables present counts of households according to ABS mortgage affordability indicator (MAID) and rent affordability indicator (RAID) categories aggregated to 2021 State and Territory boundaries, 2021 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 2021 Statistical Areas Level 2.
Separate tables for 2011, 2016, and 2021 Census years present MAID and RAID categories crossed with ABS equivalised total household income (weekly) (HIED) categories.
Time series formats include:
- A single table combining MAID and RAID data with Census year (2011-2021) in long format (i.e., one row per year per region, one column per MAID and RAID category).
- Separate MAID and RAID time series tables with Census year (2011-2021) in wide format (i.e., one row per region, one column per year per MAID or RAID category).
MAID, RAID, and HIED Variables
MAID and RAID categories indicate whether a household’s mortgage repayments and rent payments are:
- More than 30% of household income;
- Less than or equal to 30% of household income; or,
- Unable to be determined.
HIED categories vary between Census years, and as such they are not included in time series tables.

Calculated Proportions in Time Series Tables
Proportion columns are included in time series tables only. Proportions of households in each MAID and RAID category are calculated using the total number of mortgage-paying or renting households as the denominator, respectively. A value of 0 was substituted for proportions where the denominator was equal to 0. Due to confidentialisation of Census data (see note below):
- Some calculated proportions will exceed 1.00 (i.e., 100%); and,
- For some regions, calculated proportions for a given year will not sum to 1.00 (i.e., 100%).
This is particularly noticeable in areas with small dwelling counts. Users must exercise caution when interpreting cells with small dwelling counts and any proportions calculated from these cells.
Notes
The counts of households comprise occupied private dwellings, excluding visitor-only and other non-classifiable households.
The tables are based on data supplied by the ABS. 2011 and 2016 data was sourced via an ABS customised report. 2021 data was extracted by the Regional Data Hub from Census TableBuilder. Transformations and additional calculations, such as proportions, have been applied by the Regional Data Hub.
The ABS makes small random adjustments to all cell values in Census data to protect confidentiality. These adjustments mean the sum of rows or columns may differ by small amounts from totals. This may also impact proportions, percentages, and ratios calculated from the cells. The impact may be more significant for cells with small values, such as areas with low dwelling counts. Some SA2s were not included in the 2011 and/or 2016 data sourced from the ABS. These are a subset of SA2s that were first created in the 2016 or 2021 edition of the Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS). Special purpose codes for LGAs and SA2s were also absent from 2011 source tables (for more information on special purpose codes, see the ABS Census Dictionary). In time series tables with Census year in wide format, blank cells correspond to data absent in the 2011 and/or 2016 source tables.
