Foundation rail map
About the data:
The rail map is created from railway geospatial data compiled by Geoscience Australia. The map is consolidated by track gauge and simplified for the purpose of modelling the ARTC data. Simplification included removing tramlines, overlapping tracks, passing loops, rail spurs to nowhere, and tracks running close together in parallel. Rail segments were joined to form networks of different gauges and then split up at intersections to create longer non-branching segments.
Fields in the data include:
- segment: unique identifier of the segment for linking with data
- state: jurisdiction Geoscience Australia sourced the original data from
- track_gauge: standard, broad, narrow, or dual gauge attribute
- length_km: length of the rail segment in km
- geometry: geospatial vertices forming a line feature
