Vehicle Speed and Congestion Data

Data collected under BITRE’s vehicle telematics collection has been used to derive measures of median speed, which can be employed as an indicative measure of traffic congestion for freight vehicles.

It should be noted that currently heavy vehicles in the telematics dataset are small compared to the total number on the road network and hence, not necessarily representative of movements of the broader truck fleet. BITRE and the NFDH are seeking to increase the size and coverage of their telematics collection to make it more representative of the whole network, with the intention to make this data suitable to inform planning and investment in the road network and rest areas, inform industry and government on economic activity and assist trip planning among other potential uses.
